Early Life & Career

Shafali Verma’s cricketing journey began at the age of 8. Her love and talent for cricket were evident from childhood. Once, in a boys’ cricket championship, she played as her brother Sahil Verma’s disguise and won the player of the tournament award by performing better than the boys. For the first three years, she trained under her father Sanjeev Verma. Shafali’s father would take her to practice at the local field and reward her with Rs 5 for every six she hit.

Sanjeev Verma himself wanted to become a cricketer as a child, but due to lack of opportunities and support, it never happened. When Shafali tried to prove her talent, the boys initially refused to play with her, thinking she might get injured. But Shafali cut her hair and entered the field disguised as boys and amazed everyone with her skills. In 2013, at the age of just 9, Shafali went with her father to watch Sachin Tendulkar’s last Ranji Trophy match.

After watching that match, Shafali was inspired and deeply respected by Sachin, and vowed that one day she would work hard and play for the Indian cricket team. She even waited outside his residence to meet Sachin, but in the end, it was not possible. These incidents are a reflection of Shafali’s unwavering passion and determination for cricket.

Shefali Verma completed her primary education from Mandeep Senior Secondary School in Rohtak. She then joined Shiv Nader School and studied there till Grade 12.
